Whoever looks at traditional artist Mrisho Mpoto’s attire must wondered if he had in some way time travelled from the 18th century or what; the secret behind Mrisho’s amazing looking is Jocktan Makeke.
Makeke International is a Tanzanian designer and costume artist whose embroidery work used animal remnants such as skin, horns, hooves and bones as well as tree barks, leaves and flowers. Metal and paints are also used to get his concepts together.
Makeke told Azania Post that he is mostly inspired by the Pre-Colonial African environment in his creative process where he cites animals and plants to be his biggest creative influence.
Apart from designing costumes he is also involved in the creative process of Mrisho Mpoto’s videos.
Makeke is also a fine artist in painting and is a big admirer Mkwawa Mkwavinyika Hehe tribal leader in Iringa region in Southern Highland of Tanzania.
